Hi -

I'm considering giving S scale two rail a try with a small switching layout.  I was cleaning over the weekend and found a PRS boxcar kit I bought in ancient times - I was reminded how much I like the size of S.

I'm about ten years too late here, but I have questions about the S Helper Service SW1.  Can anyone help?

1. Were these offered in distinct two rail and hirail versions, or were they convertible with all the parts for each in the box?

2. Do these have a single horizontal motor?  A flywheel?

3. How DCC friendly are these?

4. The big one - does anyone have any suggestions where I can find a two rail one at this point?  Not being a current S scaler I don't have any idea of what dealers cater to the scale.

Thanks!

Heavy Duty:

1.  The S Helper locomotives all came with hirail wheelsets installed and scale wheel sets in the package.

2.  They have a single horizontal drive motor with 2 flywheels (one on each side of the motor)

3.  They will come with a DCC 8 pin plug installed and you may find them with DCC from the manufacturer.

4.  Several S dealers still have inventory for this item.  Try www.portlines.com, www.hoquathobbies.com, or www.sidetracks.net to start.  Other dealers may still have these in stock.

Ken, another guy you might is Bill Parr, his ad is in the S Gauge Dispatch.  Jeff at Hoquat Hobbies knows as much about S Helper as anyone, he shared warehouse/ store space with them.
Then I have a friend who may have already DCC equipped if you'd like that info.
I love S scale...the 3 SW9s that I have all run like a Swiss watch.

Ken,

There is virtually nothing you can't find in S scale if its already been produced, you just need to look in the right places and have a little patience for the really hard to locate items. Depending on the road you model someone has what you want, somewhere. Just like in the other gauges there are closets full of S scale locos, kits, cars and more that can be purchased. eBay is a good place to look if you don't find them at one of the S Hobby Shops listed above.
