Hi can somebody help me to fix this self generated problem? I put new traction tires on the rearmost wheels on a MTH USRA 0-6-0 and now the loco locks up. I guess I got it out of quarter? if that’s what it’s called. any easy way to reset the side roads so that it doesn’t jam up thank you.

I don't see how putting on traction tires could "unquarter" a loco unless you pulled wheels off. Not familiar with your particular loco, but you may have put some of the rods from the cylinders on wrong. I hav had some locos where these could be attach in either of 2 posiirons, 180 degrees apart, and one would jam.
Ok wrong nomenclature. Sorry. Any way to tell how to reposition the side rods correctly? Thanx.
Hard to put the siderods on wrong. Are you sure the eccentric cranks are pointing near the axles? That is the most common cause of lockup.

"Eccentric cranks: are what I meant by rods to cylinders. Forgot the proper term. Norton's comment is exactly what happens.
Ok trial and error, multiple attempts led to success, seems to be running properly Thank you both for replies.
Out of quarter will cause exactly the problem you describe also.
I had the exactly same problem and trial and error was the only way to fix it. Why only the 0-6-0's have this problem I have no idea, can anyone elaborate on this?
Maybe the spacing between the axles/drivers isn't equal. This would mean the rods would be different lengths too. They would need to go back in the exact same location.

That's certainly the case with the drivers on the LC+ 2.0 0-6-0T locomotive.

Mark can you post a picture of this engine side view?
Ron
enter the locomotive # on the original MTH web site and when the picture of it comes up, trace over the picture where you want to view and an exploded view comes up. Look at it and apply.

Hopefully in the intervening months Mark has solved his problem.
I opened this thread thinking I’d link my thread to it, to be of help. Surprised to see it had resurfaced. My thanks to Bruce Benzie for his helpful suggestion. I did manage to, through trial and error (read - lotta cussing’), get them aligned properly.
It's always good to post a solution when one is found. That adds to the collective knowledge base and serves as a thank you to everyone who helped find the solution.
