For sidewalks I've used foam core board, 1/4" plywood, and I know Scenic Express makes some as well.
I saw Brian Vail's layout in OGR issue (about a year ago) and he had nice cobblestone sidewalks. I couldn't find his e-mail, does anyone know if these are made commercially?

1/4 inch is 12 scale inches, IMO to high.
I will recommend 1/8 hardboard, easy to paint and scribe cracks and details.
Herringbone is an option for sidewalk.

Andre, you're right, 1/4" is a bit high for scale ~ although 12" high sidewalks are not unheard of, but I don't mind - the 3rd rail keeps me grounded in play-time, and I even have some 3/8" high sidewalks. BTW: What is herringbone sidewalks?
Does anyone know if Brian is still on the forum - I think he went by Passenger Train Collector. His RR was featured in 2014 OGR Christmas article. I really liked his cobblestone sidewalks.
