Silly question, but one that has me curious...

I've gotten on a roll of finding quite a few of the 1965-66 Lionel sets with the #242 style engine and some of the later Marx sets with the #400 engine in them recently (all for really reasonable prices!) and looking at those type of engines, I was wondering if Lionel or Marx had an actual prototype they were using for those engines, or were they just a hodge-podge of different locomotives combined into a generic design?
