You never know where you are going to run into interesting railroad stuff. I took my mother and brother to the High Museum here in Atlanta over Christmas and ran across this piece of railroad history.
Lots of railroad iconography on this set. Tracks around platter edge. Locomotive bells on the top of the pitchers. Railroad scenes on the front of the various pitchers and bowls.
The tray is even more interesting as there a locomotive under the sugar holder on the left and some sort of car under the cream pitcher on the right. The most interesting part is under the center bowl. There is an inscription that starts with the word "President" but then is covered up.
There is no indication in the description as to whom this was made for. I asked the docents but they did not know either and the curator for that collection was not in that day. I'm still trying to find more information and appreciate any suggestions as to where to look. Anyone know of a significant retirement or other occasion that took place in 1854 that this might have been made for?
