S.I.R.T WORKING ON THE RAILROAD

The S.I.R.T was working on the railroad today. It's not easy to do , but I was able to catch this huge piece of equipment going

by my house this morning. Does anyone know the name of it and what it's used for ??

The SIRT is long gone. Except on my layout.

It's the S.I.R.R. these days owned by the MTA, not the B&O.
