I want to run two vintage Great Northern box cars but will have to paint a caboose to match the old boys. I have a K line woodsided caboose K616-1891, but as the picture shows- it looks small. Question is , are there any woodside cabooses that would match the box cars in size? I see Lionel made a bunch in the 80' s and called them Standard O scale. Would they be larger then the K line? I am referring to the series 6-17600 to 6-17605. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Don

Steel or wood, cabeese seldom match the size of freight cars:
Funny, I always felt the K-Line scale cabeese slightly oversized...

Yeah, they're not supposed to "match". A "matching" caboose would be larger than O-scale, and incorrect.

Indeed, I have too, and I read in a magazine somewhere, way back in the distant past (early 2000's?) that they were truly built to larger than 1:48 (1:43 may be the culprit). My ICG K-line scale caboose always looked a wee bit oversized, but I never measured it.
I do 17/64 scale, O gauge. There are quite a few modern model trains that are oversize, including the Rivarossi 0-8-0, the Williams PRR switcher, and the K-Line Shay. I have the K-Line caboose - I will compare it to the other ATSF cabeese around here.
Oversize is good for me - it brings the track into proportion.

Particularly since the GN wood sided caboose was 25' long...
