It really bugs me, such a small detail Lionel won't ad to their steamers.  They would help fill in the gap between engine and tender.

Anyway where's a good source for adding these to steam engines that don't come with them?  Any tricks to adding them?  I'm guessing precision scale will come up.  I see safety plates in the catalog.

You mean "Deck Plates"?????    There was generally no "skidding" involved. Also referred to as cab to tender apron.

I show a few ways to do it in this thread. My preferred way uses eyelets, PSC diamond plate, music wire and hypodermic tubing though brass tubing would work as well. I started out using eyelets used in Lionel TOFC ramp hinges but now just use brass ones from PSC. Easy to do. Drill two holes, install the eyelets with super glue, cut the tubing to fit between the eyelets and solder to the edge of the plate.

couple of pics showing the eyelets installed and the music wire. I put a slight bend in the wire to create friction on the tube to hold it in place. One end bent at a right angle to help install and remove the wire. Deck with tubing soldered on.
