Slowing down a #3927 track cleaner

Would a 1N5404 diode (400V, 3A) be appropriate to wire into the power feed from the pickup in an old Lionel 3927 track cleaning car to slow down the rotor speed? 18 V has it spinning way too fast for longevity of the thing it seems to me. I was surprised it started right up after I had in in a cardboard box since I was a kid 98 years ago! I would like to keep it running for another 10 or 15! Thanks.

Yep, that's what I did to mine, tames it right down for command use.
