I understand this is a common problem with these plastic smoke units with the attached headlight. I saw a thread a while back where a member mentioned ball valves might be the issue. Where are these ball valves located, and are they removable for cleaning or replacement? I'm hoping that will be the fix, as the piston and piston wall seem to be in good shape. When I install it, I don't want onlookers to think my locomotive is on fire.

The ball valve is in the piston.
Chris
I consider it "steam around the steam chests" and call it good! 😁

A lot of those smoke units don't have the ball valves, and even with them, some of them leak a lot of smoke around the piston.
It's obvious when you take out the piston if it has the ball valves.
Thanks gunrunnerjohn. There are no ball valves in the piston, so that explains the leak. All I need to do now is see if they're available in the aftermarket. Yeah, I know - - - good luck with that.
Yeah, steam chest smoke is good, like on my Marx 1666. But when it starts coming out under the drivers, that might be a bit much.
