I don't know exactly what was used in those, but most smoke units use the same type fluid as Lionel, (with the exception of Seuthe type, which uses its own fluid. Don't use them in the wrong unit, or mix them..All they flyonels Ive seen, are not Suethes).

Scented fluid is my suggestion.

Pine is the original AF scent.

Thought I would hate it(sample), but I loved the Grape scent I got from Pats trains.

The Vanilla they had was good too, grape was better.

Nada, and non-scented are out there.

Lionel fluid works well, usually costs a tiny bit more.

Many swear by Mega steam for the output. But it seems to go away faster too.(go figure) they have dozens of scents.

When its good but just not enough. Ask Gun Runner John what a Super Chuffer might do for you.

Look into how you fill all your items. The correct filler tip is nice. I love the Mega steam eyedropper. Others like/ need, to buy a needle tip applicator bottle, and refill the bottle.

Hi Kelly,

According to the manual for that engine of coarse Lionel recommends Lionel premium smoke fluid. If you don't wish to void the warranty then purchase their recommendation and use as directed.

Don

Smoke fluids come with different levels of fluidity.  Lionel fluid is not thick like some smoke fluids.  I decided about 3 Flyonel engines ago to only use Lionel smoke fluid in the Flyonel engines as they were designed to use it.  I am very pleased with the results of that decision and recommend it to all my friends.

Thicker fluids are great in Gilbert engines as Gibert fluid was thicker as I still have some original Gilbert fluid.

Over time, though, I've come to use their NADA scent almost exclusively as it is close to odorless.   Two Legacy Steamers at one time can really smoke up the joint....in a good way.

Is that a new fluid scent?

Seeing how many think they can "cash in" "legally" in most states now, it wouldn't shock me to see "formula 420" or "Pepe' Le Pew" on a label.

Ohhh.... that's why he couldn't tell what was was up with the kitty..

It's as real as my receding hairline.  Nada = Nothing, implying that the fluid has no odor when it burns.  In fact, it does have some.....but it's very mild.
Most people who have allergy issues seem to be able to tolerate it, FWIW.  Same thing for wives one floor up who are used to getting smoked out.

I have tried many (e.g. dozens) of different smoke fluids as I'm sure many on this forum have as well.  Currently my universal (i.e. works well in most nearly everything) is Lionel Premium Smoke Fluid.  However, make note that this is Lionel PREMIUM of recent release, not the earlier simply Lionel Smoke Fluid.  The earlier had water in it to work in traditional Lionel bowl type smoke units (for conductivity) and frankly works very poorly in most nearly everything, especially Seuthe units.  Lionel Premium is nearly scent or odor free, but it is on the pricey side.  Prior to that my "standard" was ANormal1, but it is pretty heavily scented.  Fluids I'd say to be careful what you use them in would be the heavier (higher viscosity) blends from  All Aboard -- SuperSmoke and Big Puff,  for examples.  They're only good in heavier fluid consuming units like those in AM steam engines, but not so good in other engines, definitely not Seuthe units (e.g. Lionel-AF Mikados and Pacifics). MegaSteam products are OK.  Prior to all of these it was LVTS S-Gauge in the orange labeled brown glass bottles.  And still the best working and smelling of all time in wick-based units like Gilbert AF steam engines -- of course, the nectar of life from those little red vials -- original Gilbert smoke fluid from the 50's.  Nothing still exactly like it. And not Gilbert from the bottle -- not the same.  Two different formulations and manufacturers.  The bottled fluid has a much more kerosene smelling odor to it.  Fortunately I have a couple dozen red vials and two bottles of original AF fluids.

Hi Kelly,

I wanted to discuss your smoke fluid interest further, but did not find your email address in your profile. Please contact us at jkmegasteam@aol.com.

We have many American Flyer and Flyonel customers who are very pleased with our product...especially our Christmas Pine and Original Cedar scents. Our viscosity is such that it is safe to use in all types of smoke units including the Seuthe brand. Most manufacturer's smoke fluid is made overseas and quality control has been a problem from time to time. Mega-Steam is produced here in the U.S.A. by model train people who are passionate about their product.

Most manufacturers suggest using their own brand of smoke fluid for obvious reasons.

With over a 12 year history, we have never had a problem or concern that our product has voided any warrantee. That excuse is like your car dealer insisting that you bring your car to the dealer for all of your service needs or only using their brand of oil in your car! Many model train repair shops insist on using our smoke fluid since they want their customers to be pleased with their work. "It just works better!"

We aim to please.
