I just purchased the Williams #40104 SemiScale O27 Hudson 4-6-4 Southern Crescent.  The manual says it has a smoke unit but there is no switch on the bottom to turn off the smoke unit.  When I look in the top of the smoke stack there is a little pin right in the middle of the smoke stack and I don't think there was any smoke fluid in the box.   Does anyone know if this unit has smoke?  If yes may I use any smoke fluid...  the manual says  only Williams smoke is thin enough?

I have (had) a Williams J - new out of the box I had issues with it binding up and overheating almost instantly. It is back at my dealer for repairs.

Before sending it back, I found the JT's Mega Steam to smoke less with the Williams J Smoke Unit. Not only did it smoke less, it just lazily drifted out of the smoke stack, not up in the air like the Bachmann stuff. I've also heard of mixed reports using Mega Steam in Williams steam.

You can, what I really like, run the units dry with no fluid in them without damaging the unit.

I had an S-2 Pennsy steam engine by Williams and it did not smoke well at all. You must be extremely careful how much smoke fluid you put in the unit! Don't overfill it. I would recommend putting in an MTH smoke unit if possible, the Williams smoke units are not good at all.

Or you can tale it apart and unlpug the smoke unit plug at the circuit board.
