So I have several MTH steam locomotives that I've collected over the years and I have a question about the look of the smoke that they produce.

So most of them produce a nice billowy cloud when at rest and nice "puffs" of smoke once in motion that really does resemble steam.  A couple of them (one I recently fixed the motor on and re-wicked) makes more of a wispy stream of smoke at rest, and produces a sort of ring like smoke in motion.

All of these units are using the same smoke fluid (genuine MTH fluid) and they all come from a variety of years.  Some new, some used, some PS2 some PS3, some old and some young.  The oldest is a PRR H10 with a 5v PS2 system and the newest is a recent M1b with PS3.  There doesn't seem to be any correlation between the years, PS versions, etc.

Is there something I'm doing incorrectly when replacing the wick?  I mean generally I just put the wick material between the heating elements just like it was before and then button it back up.

Have others noticed this before?
