Is this a prototype question? Do you mean which railroads applied smoke lifters to their steam locomotives, in the U.S. and Canada?
Not really, I havea coupleof4-8-4 and was thinking of adding them without cabbaging the engine up

OK, but what railroads are you referring to? The two most famous railroads in the U.S. with 4-8-4s equipped with smoke lifters were the New York Central Niagara class 4-8-4s, and the Union Pacific FEF-2 and FEF-3 4-8-4s.
For O gauge, k line did a k4 with moke lifters and Lionel did the prr turbine with smoke lifters.
