Smoke Unit Lionmaster J3A Hudson

Love this engine but I find the smoke unit shutting down randomly. When I run it on my top line it never shuts off, but when it’s on the mainline it shuts down near the same spot. Out of curiosity could track cause a smoke unit to shut off or is there something else i’m missing?
