I purchased a JLC Union Pacific Challenger(28009) from a forum member, new in box. Wonderful detail and features. Needless to say the only issue is the smoke performance is less that optimum. I performed the smoke unit upgrade as recommended by Mike from Lionel ( great video giving instructions, larger hole in circuit board and seal, oiled impeller, new smoke batting, presoaked etc). I still don't like the smoke performance. Any suggestions from members on a smoke unit upgrade that I could install. Would there be a recent new unit from Lionel I could swipe out ? Or any other manufacture suggestions that would work in this locomotive. Appreciate any advice.Al B

Oh oh, I didn't catch that I needed to change the resistor. I can do that.Al B
Mike doesn't talk about replacing it in the video, that's why. The resistor swap is something several of the guys here on the forum like to do. Just be careful as it will get hotter, and might hurt other things.
Maybe candidate for professional upgrade down the road . Will get chuff upgrade done at same time.

That number is clearly wrong, the 28009 is a semi-scale Hudson! I suspect what you have is the 28064 JLC UP Challenger
I routinely replace the 27 ohm stock resistor with a 20 ohm resistor, it really does help the smoke output. Of course, I also usually am installing the Super-Chuffer as well. I have the JLC Challenger sitting behind me waiting on it's Super-Chuffer install, it'll get the usual smoke tuneup in the process. Part of most of the installations is the four chuff upgrade as well.
