Snap Ring Pliers really are not the trick - I always have success with a small screw driver. Sometimes the horseshoe clips don't survive for reuse but are available from the usual suspects for a dime or so.

I use a small needle nose plier and sometimes have to use a pair of small flat bladed screwdrivers to get a small opening to insert the needle nose pliers.
