With snow expected soon here in Maryland, I was reminded of another winter day in Hagerstown, MD. This was February 1972.

Great photo. Bill,
It is snowing and cold here in Lynbrook, N.Y. now and I feel a chill just looking at the photo.
Ralph
Starting in Richmond........
Supposed to be starting here in Northern Virginia any minute now. Expecting about 6-8" which is a lot more than we've had in a long time.
Here too in NNJ….side roads are covered.
Love the photo Bill. I really enjoy seeing Reading pics.

rumours been flying around about next week we could have a another storm that could be bad as the winter of 78 storm..
We have about 1-2 inches in Hellertown Pa already....
Current indications are that we will receive only 1/2" here in Greensboro which at the low temps will turn to dang ice. I had much rather have the event pictured [12/10].
I lived in the N.C Mountains, worked and lived in New Jersey and Manhattan and lived at Baker Hall through the '78 Boston Blizzard. So I am not a stranger to the toil and toll of real snowstorms.
Nevertheless I was hoping for a shallow "shovel ready" Southern scenic photo op . The depth pictured is just enough to get the Gibsonville G-Railers out to the center park layout with their snowplows.[three local TV Stations go ape over it].
We had five and half feet in less then 8 days! The temp last night was 20 below zero here in Watertown New York.
You guys keep it up in northern VA OK?
They're saying 2-4" down here in Portsmouth but right now the sun is shining
5-1/2 FEET!?!?!? 20 BELOW!?!?!? You must be near Buffalo, my wife sez that's the coldest place she's ever been (she's from Mississippi)
Just got home from work in Philadelphia. Drove to the Northeast from my workplace in Germantown (the VA Center). I think we have 1" to 2" on the ground already.
The S-word (and I don't mean SEXY....lol) is forbidden on this forum site until further notice...!!!!
Wow! Snowing during the winter season...who woulda thought??!!
It is snowing heavily on Long Island right now, and it is going to cause havoc with the Long Island Rail Road as New York City commuters scramble for home early. Frozen switches, signal problems, slippery platforms, stuck crossing gates, and a whole lot more will plague the early rush hours.
Found a neat historical shot I thought some might like-an old picture of the Maple Leaf's last run at Allentown, PA, in 1961. Add ten points because the power was a PA and add ten more points if you are a fan of the Valley....

We are 80 miles North from Syracuse New York or 25 miles from the Canadian border in the Thousand Islands region. The reason people live so long up here is becuse six months out of the year we are frozen stiff.
Being retired, no obligations to meet, plenty of food and drink in the house and having someone to shovel the it, I really do enjoy the snow - the more the better. We have about 2" on the street now in Baltimore and expect another 6" - 8" of GLOBAL WARMING.

And not just any snow. This is (gasp) Winter Storm Janus. They'll be talking about this one for decades….or at least until the next forecast of more than 4 inches!
Darned...it was 65 degrees here yesterday but today....burrrrrrrrr.....only in the upper 20's!! No snow though....

When did they starting naming winter storms?!! Is that a recent development?
Mike,
This is nothing like it was........ but hunkering down just as well. All of us likely can tell a story about an overwhelming snowy condition but does that make it any less enjoyable at present? **** I can remember trudging through miles of waste deep snow only to find my new public school closed back in 1972. It's been a long time 40 or more years since I've had a snow day (staying home from school) but then those were the 70's and that was before the local schools closed the way that they do now. Now, barely 3 inches cover the ground and there are announcements up the wazoo on the radio.

What is snow???
It is in the 60's here in Denver.
However, if you go a few miles to our west to the ski resorts, you will find some great snow.

Last I heard this was the latest great idea from the folks at the Weather Channel. And not well received by the meterological community.
While you guys are getting real snow back east here's what we are getting during a record dry spell in Southern CA. That's the Glendora hills area going up in smoke.
Oh well, Just another 2-3 inches on top of the 6 we got last weekend.
Just Another Day in Winter Paradise
And Yes, I too recall going to School with lots of Snow.
Lived on the Mountain in Colorado, Recall seeing the schoolbus coming down the highway pushing snow with it's headlights. We lived 3.5 miles from town so were some of the last picked up.
I was chatting with my Brother who now lives in Phoenix last night. It was 74° there. BAH !!

Scott is correct. This idiotic idea is courtesy of The Weather Channel. They call it a public service, so that by naming each "storm" (which in this day and age means anytime it snows) there will be "greater awareness of the potential danger to the public and people can better plan for the difficulties and problems that arise" …or some happy horses**t like that. I'm paraphrasing, but if you Google "Weather Channel Naming Storms", or go on the Weather Channel website, you'll find similar wording. It's all a big marketing hype, IMO, for The Weather Channel to pump up their ratings and importance.
I enjoy watching The Weather Channel, but come on….sometimes it just snows. It's winter.

All part of the continuing wussification of America.
Yeah - and now they are ACTUALLY naming these winter storms! GEEZ!
real weather reporting on the Weather Channel went out the window when NBC bought TWC, and most of the good meterologists left then too, because they didn't play along with NBC's chit..
Move to anywhere in the southwest. The more weather y'all get the less we get. 5 or so more years of this and Lake Powell and Lake Mead will be basically gone. So will most of the other western reservoirs. The fight over Lake Tahoe water will be historic. The west coast is in just as much denial about climate change as the Tea Party deniers and Arizona is in a trouble they don't even believe exists. Maybe next summer when they start reducing the amount of water available to Arizona agriculture by double digits...
I agree with Reading Fan! What polar vortex!
BANDOB:
Thanks for posting your great vintage shots in the snow. Keeping with the intended spirit of the thread, here's Red Bank, NJ along the New York & Long Branch Railroad on January 6, 1979. The units are the 4272, an E8 owned by the New Jersey Department of Transportation which was rebuilt under contract by the ICG shops at Paducah, KY (famous for its GP8 and GP10 units) , and Conrail E8 4014. The 4014 was the former Erie Lackawanna 825. The train is westbound for Bay Head.

Went railfanning today on the former Clinchfield and NS loops west of Old Fort, NC. Temps hadn't fallen as quickly as I thought and only hit and miss snow squalls. The Clinchfield was dead, (coal has taken a big hit on this line) seeing only one empty grain train exiting Blue Ridge tunnel. Went down to the NS, called one of my buddies for a line up and had a good afternoon. Shot eastbound Duke Power coal train, then met a westbound chip train with BNSF power on the point, followed by the green and crème BNSF, and then a NS dash 8. Followed him west and got some great shots (snow was starting to fall heavily) of crossing the bridge which is almost someone's front yard. The reason for going today was to get some snow and train shot which will be our 2014 Christmas cards. Didn't get the grand slam shot I wanted, but it's at least a three run shot.
May go back Thursday as some more snow is in the forcast for the hills.
I ALMOST feel guilty. It' 75 here now and the tomatoes are getting ripe!

I kinda feel guilty because all our snow will eventually melt .... keeping our water acquifers full.
Reading the paper, it seems the California drought is getting severe. How is it in your area?
