I assume you have a 263W tender?  If so, the power feed is already in place.  Simply take out the whistle unit and put a sound board in its place.  Mount a speaker near the sound vent in the tender for best results...

So what kind of board?  there many differing kinds and the prices are from $20.00 to $250.00. and a lot have interface with control boards to actuate the sound or play recording of messages, I would like one that i can actuate with a regular power supply with Bell and Horn buttons. I believe most would need some type voltage regulator as not to be effected by voltage drops and increases.

have you ever done this and if so do you have photos to share or sketches.

So I cracked the tenders open and found them all fully loaded up. Before I opened them I connected them to my MTH 263e and they all worked.

On the bottom they have a sticker stating that they are proto sound 2.

so now is the big question how can I jerry rig to run the sound with my prewar 260Es

So I’m going out on limb here. I downloaded the ps-2 installation manual from the MTH website and found this wiring diagram.

so as I see it I can just add a roller pick up on the tender. connect the track power to the tender. This allow me To actuate the sound for the whistle, Bell and PSA by use of the MTH buttons on the speed controller. The PS 2.0 board should operate without connecting the power leads to the train motor.

I would think the power to motor wouldn’t be compatible with a prewar 260e motor. However if I do not connect the leads from the tender cable there shouldn’t be any issue I just wouldn’t have accessibility to any of the controls for train remote operations.

I am only interested in the sound from the PS 2.0 board not the operation. I have an electronic e-unit already installed in the locomotive.

Ok so I am thinking after further discussion with gunrunner that trying to use the existing boards wouldn’t work with my current trains.

so I’m thinking of tossing out the PS 2.0 bards and installing the Railsounds commander board.

has anyone any advice on the board I’m looking to buy four steam versions

New question: so the PS 2 5v boards have really great sound effects and have Christmas PSA announcements, I really would like to reuse these boards.is there anyway I could install a DC to AC converter to tie in the PS 2 power leads to a Prewar AC motor (260E)

background: purchased four tinplate o gauge tender (2) 263w and (260w) all have Ps 2 boards. two a 5. V and two are 3v. All work, 2 are loaded with Christmas PSA announcements and one is NY rail PSA and the other is Baltimore line PSA.

I do not have any DC can motor Locomotives Only a collection of Lionel Prewar 260,261,263 and 255

any electronic gurus with insight would be extremely helpful

worst case I’ll just tie in the power to roller under the tender and not connect to locomotive motor. Not sure how the PSA would work because as part of the process to engage the PSA announcements requires you tap the reversing button several times. This may effect the train travel. I could lock out the train for forwarded travel only

Ok after a good nights sleep I realized and after taking apart an existing tinplate traditions 263e I could make the necessary modifications to a prewar motor by remove the AC motor and installing a worm drive DC can motor. This modification will allow me to fully upgrade the locomotive in future upgrades as PS advances into 3.0 and higher.

now to map out the existing perwar motor and map out the MTH motor for comparison. I checked the MTH website and both the cog, worm drive Gear  and motor is a available.

I will post my cad files for the drive gear/ motor bracket

Well, it will need a flywheel and enough space to mount the tach sensor for PS/2 or PS/3 upgrades.

As for something beyond PS/3, that's pretty optimistic based on the current state of MTH!  I think it'll be quite some spell, if ever, before they're going to be producing anything past PS/3.

There appears to be plenty of room

the remakes by MTH did not venture far from the originals when it came to the motor chassis. I may have to weld in a side plate to cover the void from the removal of the commutator. There by I can drill a new hole for the cog and axle to drive the wheels from the worm drive attached to the DC can motor
