Has any one attempted to solder anything to an Atlas cast body (SW series switcher)? If so how and what did you use? I just want to solder a small light fixture.
Most diecast is a zamac alloy which is mostly aluminum. There may be a way to use solder but it requires either a special solder or it has to be copper plated first. Best just use JB Weld.
there is a product offered by Micro-Mark that facilitates soldering to die cast metal. it is a copper-bound product that wipes on bare metal as a prep.
of course one has to be careful soldering as die cast may have a lower melting point. JB Weld is a very good alternative.
I tried soldering to some diecast many years ago when I first starting model building. It was bad, I ended up melting the diecast more than once. I don't try that anymore!
Not knowing how small your "light fixture" is and where it is to be attached, a method used by some modelers (and I have done this) is to drill and tap the diecasting and insert a small brass screw ( 00-90, 0-80 or 2-56) where the part is to be attached. Cut the screw flush with the casting and solder you detail part to the screw.
