How big? What are you soldering?
John
I have a trailing truck kit from Precision Scale that I need to solder together. The tongue is pretty thick Doubt my iron would do the job!

If it is something small for occasional use a Butane hand held would work. You don't need a bunch of interchangeable tips for different small jobs.

A little better than the Dremel

I use a butane or Mapp gas bottle with a Turner (no relation) pencil tip. Adjust the flame for what you are doing.
I am successful at huge casting assemblies, and with the same torch can put a fine fillet around a grab iron in .020 brass sheet without distortion. Don't let the flame hit the wire.
Does Walmart have the right quality of Butane? Other sources of butane? Thanks
I use the basic little hand held torch from Home Depot for 90+% of my soldering work; perfectly adequate.
I use a small butane torch for much of my brass work. Ones as have been mentioned are fine. I use butane refills from Lowes...it works well. Your use of the torch will gain skill and technique as you get more involved in its use. It has almost replaced the standard soldering iron for many of my soldering needs.

Get something small enough that you easily can handle it with one hand. Micro Mark sells them, among other places already mentioned.

I use one of these also for quick access to heat. I really like my pencil torch better though, since it screws onto a bottle with a 3 foot hose and is smaller and has better flame adjust. But this would work fine for what he needs.

Which one do you have?

I don't remember where I got it. Probably 20 years old now. But it has a black braided hose and a valve to hook to bottles. I run propane or mapp through it. I think they have pencil flame types now that you can recharge so you are not tied to a bottle though.
There are many different ideas on board here, all good. For my self I use the good old stand by BernzOmatic, a butane hand held that can be purchased almost any where. I do cheat and eliminate the two step safety detent for one hand operation simply to favor my joint pain.
Early on I watched my electrical subcontractor use one of these for soldering wire connections and he was streaming along like a sewing machine. Ever since then I trained like crazy to imitate his work. When you have lots of drop connections to make, being both safe and comfortable with using a flame your work will be quick and secure.

I got a similar one at Lowes, works fine.
Funny thing...I started a topic and posted a link just like you, got an email saying the Admins deleted the link due to that South American River not being a sponsor of the forum. Selective censorship I suppose
