I think it is mentioned in the posting as 1.3 which means it can be upgraded to the latest version. But John is right it really does not matter since Lionel will perform the upgrade if it is version 1.1 at no charge you just need to get an RA and send back the base and remote.

I still can't figure out why it is still available considering people are paying almost twice on e-bay. MR at Lionel is very liberal regarding Legacy upgrades due to the fact that they want to defeat a capability that the un-upgraded versions may have.

According to the original designer of the system there were some capabilities built in that were never activated.

Not to create a conspiracy theory  but didn't anyone wonder why Lionel would go to all the trouble to recall the Legacy systems and upgrade them at great expense yet were in total denial for the defects in the recent Legacy PRR Uc28?

That engine had missing keystone decals that they could have supplied to those of us who requested them for not much more that the cost of a first class stamp yet they refused to even acknowledge that it was a defect.

Because you couldn't do an upgrade the way it was and some other issues that were prevalent early on.  The 990 runs the entire fleet that effects a great deal of users.

As one that tried to upgrade a 1.0 unit without sending it in, I can tell you that you could not upgrade it without the factory firmware loader.  Regardless of how they conspired, to do further upgrades you had to send it in for an update.

In truth, I didn't really wonder at all why they did it.  If your Legacy system has a problem, you're likely not to be inclined to buy Legacy locomotives, so it makes sense that Lionel would bend over backwards to make sure the Legacy system has all the latest updates and works 110%.

I sometimes wonder about the black helicopters flying over my house, and the clicks and pops in my phone line when I'm conspiring with my cohorts, but I really didn't wonder about this upgrade.

My original non-upgraded system worked just fine but I had it upgraded when they recalled them.

I do understand that there are some additional features that the upgraded software provides and that many users really like using them but I never had any issues with the original system that I had.

Those are TV helicopters hovering over when there are traffic accidents. Years ago when I was in the commercial orchid plant business in Harleysville we frequently had police helicopters fly over the greenhouse. It was a large greenhouse on residential property but I always wondered why the did that.

Better start putting aluminum foil over your windows. That reflects the signal. A cap made out of the foil will keep them from reading your thoughts.

I knew that but I was serious when I mentioned that the helicopters would frequently flyover our greenhouse. They used infrared detectors to measure heat output which is a sign that excess electricity is being used mainly to grow weed. We just grew orchid plants.

Name of the company was Crystal Orchids and we had over 15000 species and hybrids that we grew in a 24'x48 foot greenhouse. What attracted  the attention of the state police was the size of the structure on a residential property. We had a few unannounced visits from time to time.
