Bought this adapter piece at the MTH parts booth at York.  Was told by the MTH guy that it's the only adapter they carry.  Doesn't look like it's going to be doing me any good though.

The pictures might be hard to see what's wrong but if you look you'll see that the height of the adapter is too high to fit into the knuckle coupler of the car.

I need a break - this is not a good start to my entry into tin-plate!!!!

Thanks for the documentation and the comment.

"fashion it to fit"????  It needs to be a good 1/4" lower.

$1.25???  Obviously you didn't buy yours from the MTH parts booth at York!   I would have loved paying ONLY that much!

Why do you want to pull the blue comet cars with an MPC locomotive?

I don't.  It was just a test to see how the part worked, since I'd never had or seen one before.

I couldn't try what I think I will use it for because I don't have a working tin-plate engine right now.

What I want to use it for is to have my tin-plate engine/tender, possibly with some tin-plate cars in tow, drag around 5 "knuckle coupler" gons that I use to create a candy train for the kids.  When I know some are coming I'll hook up the gons.  When none are coming, no gons.
