Sound system problems in DCS

Have you opened it up and checked the seating of all the connectors?  Wiggle each one and pull it out and reseat it.  This may be a poor connection.

By any chance have you tried another speaker. It is possible the speaker is breaking down.

Screeching & banging..sounds like the train wreck sound effects are being played.

Random noises and static sounds..sounds like everything is working fine.

Have you tried turning down the accent sounds?

What transformer are you using?

Alan, I'm using a MTH Z4000 transformer.  I took the shell off one of the offending engines today and checked the connections on all the plugs I could find.  That one seems to be working better now although it sounded like it was trying to go into the screaching mode a couple of times.  Might be just a coincidence that it is working better.  It has done that in the past.  Re the train wreck sounds, this is different.  It is more like an electronic noise of some kind.  It's sort of like the volumn jumping from zero to wide open sometimes.  Hard to describe.

What is your product number?  If it is a 5V board you might be dealing with the flaking on the speaker issue.  Look at your rollers.  They should be clean and spin very free.  Early MTH rollers had the center pin corrode inside the roller and cause exactly what you reported.

Look for debris on speaker cone inside the fuel tank casting.  Just turn the engine up side down and have a close look.  You could have picked up a small nail or metallic dust that is causing sound distortion.  The effect of just a small amount of debris can be quite dramatic.

The flaking of the 16 ohm speakers Marty mentioned won't necessarily show on the cone, it moves to the backside and towards the coil.   Best to examine the magnet band.  Marty's advice about rollers is also sound.  Causes stray DC signals that can activate sounds.  G

Marty, I shot some electronic contact cleaner into the pick up roller center axles and it seemed to help.  Ran for about an hour without any noise.  The engine is a MTH GP20 with Proto 2.  It is scale size but is under the Rail King label.  Have had it for several years now.  Don't know the product number off hand.  It was from the first run of GP20"s

I swear by DeoxIT D5 for these kinds of issues, it's more than a contact cleaner.  I routinely treat my rollers with it.
