I have an MTH USRA Steam Switcher, which I took out of the box for the first time since buying it in 2002! The engine has never been run. It is an
MTH 30-1209-1 with Proto 2. First thing I did was charge the battery for about 24 hours. On the track it runs fine, but the sound system has a lot of static, and the volume is very low. Could this be a battery problem, or is it more likely a speaker or sound board problem?. Any one experience the same? Thanks.

I'll bet 99% the speaker is bad, Take the tender top off and examine the speaker. If you see flaked metal and gray cement, that is your problem. Replace speaker.
Ditto what Chuck said on the speaker, and also examine the white NICad battery for gassing out. (Blueish corrosion on the battery terminal). I don't think it will last much longer even though new at the 11 year point. Replace with a new battery. G
