What is the current status of 4501? I know she is going to be rolling out later this fall but I would love to know what she is looking like right now. I have heard from various sources that she will look very different then she has in the past. So if you have any photo's please share them with me I would love to see them!

Thanks
Josh

Correct! That photo above is #630. SR #4501 is not near that complete, yet. You might try going to www.rypn.org and look for the "Interchange" forum, then look for the thread on the latest 4501 update. The TVRM shop has added a feed water heater system AND a stoker. The current photos show that they are doing an excellent job.

I recently supplied TVRM with updated images I shot on contract for them. These were requested for use on a new line of merchandise & promotional materials to be used in connection with 4501's return to mainline service.

The request was made for images showing the BLACK paint scheme only.

You can draw your own conclusions, but I'd bet on BLACK !!!

Wonder if they would like any photos of her while on the K&T. I visited Stearns a number of times in 1963 and shot 35MM color slides and 4X5 B&W, at least one shot was published in on of the late Don Ball's books.

It's an argument no one is ever going to win...

Did 4501 wear green in regular service?  No.

Did Southern paint standards say that ANY engine in passenger service could be green?  Yes.

Do some people prefer green?  Yes.

Do some prefer black?  Yes.

Personally I just want to paint the cab roof red so people lose their minds.

Does #630 have a red cab roof?

That'll do it, Hot.

Southern did not regularly paint cab roofs red.  But there are a lot of Southern steam models running around with red cab roofs.  Southern DID paint tender decks and the backs of coal bunkers red, but not many people paint their models that way.

The late Dale Roberts, a student of SRy steam painting and detailing, had to search widely to find someone who vaguely recalled seeing red cab roofs on some CNO&TP Pacifics. but Bernie Gallagher of the Washington area who worked at Alexandria shop says he never saw one, and Bernie's experience includes all the Spencer-maintained passenger power.

I'm voting for 4501 to come out in freight livery.  She was OK in green, as was 722, back in the 1960s when they needed to make a statement, but not now.

And 630 has a black cab roof.
