Yesterday my wife and I went on the 11:00 a.m.  Memorial Weekend Excursion run of the Southern Pacific 2472.  We went from the Sunol Station to the Niles Station and back thru the beautiful Niles Canyon. We rode in the SP 2979 Lounge Car.  This car is over 100 years old.  In the 1940's it was totally remodeled by the SP.  It had a lounge area and a bar.  It was one of 6 that the SP refurbished.  It ran on all of the SP's major passenger routes up until 1962.  After that some winery in Napa Valley acquired it and made it into a stationary wine tasting bar.  Eventually it was acquired by the Golden Gate Railroad Museum.  It took many years and over $100K for them to restore it to running condition.  We had a wonderful ride in that car while sipping wine and beer from the bar.  While in the lounge car we got a chance to chat with a friend, Dave Roth, who is Director of Train Operations for the Golden Gate Railroad Museum.  But the real treat...as always...was the 2472!  It may not be the 4449 or the 844, but it will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart and it is my favorite restored steam locomotive.  I have to thank Scale Rail for that.

She stirs the heart of this old B&O fan. I think it's the Vandy tender that does it, plus she's a beautiful locomotive!

PS.

boin 106,Just watched the movie. Moving for an old timer. I can recall many newsreels and photos of GIs moving to bases to go to war during ww11, often behind these sharp Espee pacifics and those Espee style passenger cars. Nice.

HW,

I'm no railroad man, but I was blessed enough to get to be the sound man when Scale Rail did a promotional film on the 2472.  We got to ride in the cab and on the tender for filming purposes.  While we never got to 65 mph, it was still a great thrill and a once in a lifetime event for me.  We went on the 2472 several times when it was not a public excursion.  So much fun.  As a result the train crew made us honorary members and gave us a coveted "Engine Crew" T-shirt.  Great times!  Matt

I grew up in the last days of SP steam, 2-8-0's on the Santa Cruz branch, valley moguls, back up malleys shoving on Tehachapi, big GS's on the daylights air horns cutting thru the fog. The last steam I recall watching in revenue service was an 0-6-0 toiling away on a long cut of cars at the north end of Fresno yard.  I rarely go to these railfan steam events however as they seem too contrived compared to the old days when the locos just went about their jobs naturally. Making the steamers perform reminds me of dancing bears at a circus or orcas at sea world. I prefer to remember them as they were and let them rest in peace....DaveB
