I have a question or two about the SP oil cans on the Tehachapi Loop. One, why were the tankers connected by hose and was there an oil flow between the middle DPUs? Second, and finally, why weren't there spacer cars used? Was that not yet a federal law?

Its my understanding that the hoses are to have centralized loading/unloading.

That's actually a great idea considering how long the trains were.

Those are NOT "DPUs", but maned mid-train helpers (the Engineer is plainly visible in the cab with the window open and his arm hanging out). No, there would be no hose connected around the mid-train helpers. Once the mid-train helpers were removed, the train would then be spotted for loading/unloading.

Correct, no requirement for "buffer cars" back then (video dated 1995).

So, I have the Santa Fe Odyssey dvd, and in one scene, there was a crew change at Marceline, and at least two of the locomotives were crewed. Was each locomotive INDIVIDUALLY controlled?

Crew Change at 3:41.

Most likely a deadhead crew, riding the trailing unit/units.
