From what I recall the Southern Railway mostly used SD40-2s and SD40s in the 1970s and 1980s if that is the time period you are referring to. Most of the SD45s were gone or going with the formation of NS.
I am a seaboard man but due to going with my granddad.I became a fan of their sd units.And their higher pitched horns.Seeing them run long end forward was a suprise to me.
