The NC Arboretum near Asheville developed a really nice outdoor RR for their Winter Lights program last Christmas Season and our regional PGRR Garden RR Club helped design, construct and operate two lines of trains during a grueling holiday schedule through mid January. It was so successful that they decided to extend operations starting again a few weeks ago on Saturday afternoon for the public. This too has been a real hit with the children especially with us running Thomas & Friends.

The main idea is the 'Rocky Cove RR', a fictitious logging line that could have plied its way through these western Smoky Mountains. Most of the equipment was donated by a few patrons of the Arboretum last year with not much fitting the theme they wanted. These donated items have been sitting in a room since late last summer when the project got underway in ernest. Just recently, it was finally decided to sell off the surplus items that didn't fit and I was able to procure this handsome Southern RS3 by Aristocraft.  I've wanted one of these for a long time and now it is part of the roster!

Here she is today with our USA Trains Warbonnett PA in the sunshine when I went to pick it up.

I got my first G scale train (4-6-0, tank car, caboose) this past Christmas.  I was just going to display it but as things go I purchased some 8' diameter curved track too.

Found out I only have 1 place (upstairs) to put it down unless I move a lot of furniture!!!  Shoulda got 5' curve instead

Guess I'll have to get more creative with my track plan

My first O scale engine was a Railking RS3, that G scale engine is curvy and beautiful.

A nice choice

What hours do the garden RR operated and open to the public during the summer?

Happy railroading,

Don

Don,  the Arboretum is open daily while the club operates the RR itself on Saturdays only so far from noon to four with more hours to be added hopefully soon.

You can view the RR anytime and it's really pretty. Maybe even sneak a locomotive in and grab some quick photos  :-)

Bob Delbridge,  you won't be sorry for picking up that 8' diameter track if you ever get the bug for a larger loco to run around.  I started with 8'.  It ran diesels ok but is kinda tight for say a 2-8-2. It ran around those curves kinda slow.  A 2-6-2 or so would probably make it around pretty good.
