Hi, I have a small problem with a speaker in a Lionel 2426 modern tender with rail sounds/ or at least s-o-s/ and whistle. the problems is a black wire coming from the speaker back to where? I have looked all over the board and can not figure out where it was connected. I thought it a ground, so I ground it to a lug on the on/off switch for the S-O-S, not to the switch but to the outside of the switch where the mounting screw comes through/ so really all in all it would be to the frame. My question is should have it went to the board some where. I looked front and bottom over for a couple of hours with magnifying glasses and could see no where it would have went. please help. Thanks// This tender is from the 8406/783 Hudson.

It would not go to ground.
Carl is right do NOT ground that wire! OTOH, I'm not sure how he determined you had a RailSounds Commander in that unit.
That's one way. I wondered where you came up with that.
You got a item number for this tender, I have one of those and I can probably take a pic of it...

Is this something you just picked up used? If so, could it just be a non-functional wire the previous owner soldered on for who knows what reason - maybe an experiment to add a 2nd speaker or whatever.
Is the problem that the sound does not work? I'm wondering, If it ain't broke, don't fix it?
this was new in the box. I must have broke the wire myself, I was adding a sound chamber under the speaker, when I was ready to put the shell back on, I noticed the black wire was loose. It worked well, I was just trying to get a little more sound out of it. I didn't take any wires loose, didn't need to. I just never noticed the black wire before, makes me want to say; HM, where did that come from?
He list the model. This is 6-8406 and is a SOS tender. I am not sure why a wire was attached to speaker. I can't find a wiring diagram on Lionel' web but here is a representative diagram. I know you say new, but this is a 1984 model so are you sure it wasn't worked on.
I just don't remember extra wires on a speaker. Circuit board yes, but not speaker. G

Well,, I learn. Electronic SOS. I will delete my posts of ignorance.
I've been digging through the old service manuals and supplements. The tender for the 8406 seems to have been missed in the drawings. Use 8306-T01. The engine is listed with 8306 and 8606.
In any of the Electronic SOS tenders or retrofits there are only two wires to the speaker. So, insulate that wire or clip it off.
Do you have the 3 plug wire?
I have attached the index from Supplement 17, which sends you Supplement 10 for engine parts and the 8306-T01

Thanks fellas with all your advice and help; I went back and did some more checking. It works without the black wire? Don't believe this was added later it looked factory, but anyways it works. So again a big THANKS to all who took the time.
Good news! Nice train by the way.
thanks MoonMan

What looks odd is the black wire was soldered to the lug side where the speaker voice coil wire is soldered. Also black wire looks odd with electrical tape and what appears to be a solder lug crimp on, which would lead me to suspect a customer add on. I would just carefully unsolder or clip off black wire from voice coil lug.
Yes, that is a crimp on; I put that on . I wasn't sure what to do with it. the wire was bare so some black tapeto cover that and a crimp on, yes I did that. I tried it with out the wire hooked to anything and it worked fine so I clipped it off. Done
