I just finishing reading the book "Life and Adventures of A--No. 1, America's Most Celebrated Tramp".

For those of you who are familiar with the hobo A #1 in the movie Emperor of the North and might be thinking this would be a wealth of information about being a hobo riding the rails, you better think again. Written by Leon Ray Livingston, the real A #1, there is more talk about adventures in countries outside the USA than in. And, those tales are nothing but boring. Is there any insight as to the time period (very late 1800's to very early 1900's)? I guess there is, but, not so much about life riding the rods and brake beams. I would say that there is more information to be learned about hobos from watching the Hollywood movie than can be learned from this book.

As they used to say, save your confederate money boys...

I guess I'll just have to eat this one.

PS For anyone determined to find out for themselves, I'll sell you my copy for a decent price. It's only been read once.

I would not use any hollywood movie, even Emperor of the North, as my source for an education.

Dear Big Jim,Rusty Track, and Steve,

I have my Kindle out and attempted to look for the book about A#1 couldn't find it found another by the author you mentioned that is going for free. But I Found something EVEN BETTER did you know that A#1 wrote several books? I didn't! It is called "From Coast to Coast with Jack London" it lists for $0.99 I have already down loaded a sample for free! I will let you know how it reads! He also published "Hobo Camp Fire Tales", "The Ways of the Hobo", "The Snare of the Road", "The Mother of The Hoboes and Other Stories" and the "The Curse of Tramp Life".

From Coast to Coast with Jack London details his trip with London between New York to Oakland.

I can't wait to read my sample.

Maybe I'll get the set online!

It says it was published in 1917!

I would suspect the opposite is true.  Hollywood has a small tendency to glamorize and exxagerate things a bit.

Rusty

Well, if you don't believe me, go read it for yourself.

Fella's,

You really should read one of these books! The book I am currently reading tells of his cross country adventures with Jack London who I was aware was an accomplished author but I didn't know was a hobo! Fascinating! Travelling along with A# 1!

Takes the romance out of life on the road makes you wonder how desperate people get and glad to be not a part of that scene......
