Would you be interested if a dealer was to do a special run of the J3a hudson with the options you wanted?

With all the talk of the J3a Hudson in the new Lionel catalog on this forum, it seems like there's something about each cataloged version that somebody has an issue with (class lights, wheel selection, boiler color, tender choice, etc).  A dealer would need a minimum of 25 units.  Nicholas Smith did the K4 special run last year with 25 units. Charlie at Nassau is doing the Western Maryland Challenger with 25 units. Mr. Muffins is also doing various runs on the RS11. I could see two different Hudson's being offered with regards to regular or PT tender.

In choosing options:

-All black, no white walls or white stripes.

-No class lights (since the cataloged version all have them)

-Type of wheels: all boxpok (no mixing)

-Dark grey boiler (No silver)

-Darken siderods

-Darken cylinder caps

-Optional tender: Regular or PT

Just trying to see who might be interested and what options you'd like to see.

(And the correct headlight, for goodness' sake!)

Maybe...12-wheel tender preferred - but I still want what they will never do (i.e. - truly new tooling) - the later "Worthington"/other differences version. 3rd Rail offered this years ago (I have it - bad tender lettering and all), but I would be tempted by a Lionel.

Still...I'd consider it.

"Would that require two different boiler fronts then? With and without holes?"

That "un-holey" tooling does exist already (or did, anyway); the later J3a (5433) that came with the scale Madison set was correct on that point.

BTW - here is my 5444 from which I removed the class lights. Easy, actually - unscrew the light castings, push the LED's into the front, out of sight, fill holes with Bondo, sand, touch up. There are a couple of missing bolt heads (these are not rivets). No disassembly required.

It’s probably beyond the scope of a “special run” version, but I would preorder this Legacy Hudson in 4 milliseconds:

Did you miss the model that Sunset/3rd Rail did of that NKP Hudson?

Weaver offered the NKP 4-6-4, Alco and Lima versions, in brass/TMCC/RS. Saw one on eBay a few days ago. Nice model; bit light - correctable. I did not know that 3rd did them.

A NYC Hudson is certainly not a good starting point for this loco, if that is what you are thinking.

OK, thanks for the correct, i.e. Weaver issued the NKP Hudson models and NOT Sunset/3rd Rail.

Sandman...  i would walk over broken glass to order that too...  fantastic...  lets hope we get it with Legacy from a dealer...

That’s a far cry to get that locomotive in a special run....there isn’t a NYC central model in all of Lionel’s arsenal to come close ....Jack already mentioned this...they already fussing about marker lights....I could just see it now if they used existing tooling for that model......the gates of y’all know where would open up.......save that model for a brass hybrid....then ya have something.....at least give’em a chance to get it right...........Pat

We tried to do this as a special run and talked with Lionel about it - it was just too different from the tooling they have.... We will keep our eyes open for another opportunity.... the brass version is a good idea... we have both of the Weaver versions in our collection - very nice....
