This is something similar to 10 Steam Locomotives You Would Save.

Only this time, we are referring to specific steam engines. As in, if you have one you would want to save, give the number of a specific type. For instance, if I wanted to answer with a PRR I1, it'd have to give specific number.

Only one?? Okay... N&W #1218

It is already saved. Guess you didn't read the original poster's requirements?

Your idea of saved and mine differ somewhat. If it cannot run on demand, it needs saving. Probably, that is totally economically unrealistic.

I see thread after thread of projects to prep a locomotive to run a single excursion. IMO, that is a process of temporarily saving the locomotive, only to be set aside in a sorta suspended animation, hoping the elements don’t consume it before the next effort to temporarily save the locomotive.

My idea of saving a locomotive would be the Consolidation #1702 that has regular runs on the Great Smokey Mountain Railroad.

GSMR #1702 was originally built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1942 for the US Army. It was acquired by GSMR in 1994 and ran until 2004. Then in 2013 an agreement between GSMR and Swain County (NC) started the restoration (saving) of #1702. In the summer of 2016, #1702 was returned to service with regular runs.

I would have liked to see Cumberland & Pennsylvania/Winchester & Western 2-8-0 #32 saved. A 1910 product of C&P's MT. Savage,MD. shops, it ran until 1944 until the Western Maryland took over the C&P. The engine was sold to the W&W in Gore,VA. in 1945, and ran there until Oct. 1951 when W&W dieselized. It was unfortunately scrapped in 1953. #32 turned to be the last survivor of any of the C&P's engines, and its construction was very typical of the 26 Consolidations built by the C&P for its own use from 1888-1917.
The small size and 50" drivers make it a little undersize for the main line, but today this size engine would be perfect for operations such as the Everett, Potomac Eagle, and especially home rails on the Georges Creek RR.

Running on demand actually creates wear and tear, rather than saving a locomotive.

However, in the spirit of this thread, a locomotive that truly needed saving was CB&Q 5632.

NC&StL #576 4-8-4 "Dixie" class, currently under restoration here in Nashville, TN. Needs to be moved to the Tennessee Central Railway Museum for continuing restorative work. Hopefully will operate in excursion service on the adjoining Nashville and Eastern Railway out of Nashville! Excursion train set already exists for this loco to pull! One wye already is operational, while second one needs work. Turntable is avaliable for installation in Lebanon, TN.
