Hello All,

Need some advice.   Does anybody know of an over the counter brand of spray can paint color that is a good match for the Lionel Conrail blue satin paint that has been used for about the last 10 years?   I am partially repainting/decaling a couple of pieces along with adding a few details that will be painted to match.   Please,  no suggestions on paints that need to be used with an airbrush as I don't own one and don't wish to start down that road at this point in my life.   Advice is appreciated.   Thanks

Nick

I second the advice that Chris has given you. I know at one point Lionel had a full rack of Scale Coat II in the service dept for any paint touchups that were needed and I also know that they have used Scale Coat for many of the full run LionScale projects the last few years. While it may not be a perfect match to what the overseas factory uses, it's going to get you darn close.

Just FYI, I own enough Conrail equipment from Lionel, MTH, K Line, etc. that there is about ten shades of Conrail blue. It was that way in the real world as well. Don't feel too bad if it doesn't match perfectly. Conrail blue faded at different rates and could be viewed as a few different shades based on Sunlight etc.

You could try MinuteMan model scale coat paints. They bought Weavers line of paint when Weaver went out. They also sell spray cans so you don’t need an air brush.  The top link is their page and the bottom link are the Conrail colors. 🎨

I must be missing something basic, these two have the same number, just a different packaging.  Why are the colors represented so different?

I get that the color on the page may not be 100% accurate, but if they're the same color, they should at least look the same?

Like I said, maybe I'm simply missing something very basic.  I hope so, or otherwise I couldn't feel confident actually ordering this paint!

Seeing there's several threads going on about color, I though I repost this old chestnut.  While this doesn't excuse flat out using the wrong color, it illustrates an aspect of the perception of color.

Now, years ago I was able to compare my model with the EMD paint chip and the match is perfect.  BTW, the "official" designation for the color is "Aluminum."  Which probably explains why for decades, HO companies painted their Burlington F-unit models silver.

Bill Wade from BTS once told the tale of a modeler who had an HO E-unit shell painted Seaboard seafoam green using the actual paint from the Seaboard's shops.  All of the local "experts" who saw the model said it was the wrong color.

Go figure...
