OK, here's an odd one. I've never seen a stack quite like this. Is this similar to the spark screens on Civil War era locomotives? The shape is interesting to say the least.
A friend of mine took this picture in Kent CT at an "old time machinery" Museum the other day.

I seem to recall those being referred to as "Cabbage Stack", and are indeed a design of spark arrestor for wood burning steam locomotives.

That's all I could think of, and indeed the one I just found called it a Cabbage Head. I never saw one that shape before.

You nailed it! 
Also called "Rushton" stacks, they're not exactly common, but there are still plenty of examples in the real world and in old photos. I think you may have seen them on a lot of export engines, and logging locomotives.
Bachmann offers a similar stack with some (all?) of their On30 steam engines; only they call it an "Onion Stack".
Always room for an education here, I had never seen one of those before.
