Hello!

My parent's church has a rummage sale each year as a fund raiser. This year they had a large lot of old trains donated. Most items are Marx and I am helping them determine values for these. This train, however, has me stumped. It is a non-powered pull toy labelled "Stafford Liner 1006". I've Googled it and have found a little information. It looks like it may have made in the 1930s, by a company in Detroit. Value, though, has me stumped. The listings I've found have numbers all over the place (from tens to hundreds of dollars). This train does seem to be in better shape than most pictures I've seen (though there is no box). Anyone have an idea of value? I will likely be buying the trains, but I want to make sure the church receives a fair price.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Derek

I have a few of these and really like the streamlined style. There are a few variations on the locomotives, the red version looks really sharp. The lettering is either raised or just painted on, and either says Stafford Liner or Stafford Liner 1006. Also the locomotives that were sold without the train cars do not have a tow hook.  A larger set was available with multiple colored gondolas.  There was also a much larger (18") Stafford Diesel. Advertisements describe how tough they are, made of heavy gauge steel that can withstand being stepped on. The bodies might be strong but are often missing wheels. As noted the toys were made in Detroit,  and the advertising shows 1946. I also couldn't find much information about the company.

Prices online are all over the place,  with asking prices from $10 to 500🤔. Sellers also give a wide range of when they are guessing the trains were made. 20210319_15025320210319_1504291616179061860 Looking at completed auctions gives a much better idea of the going rate.  Locomotives are about 10-15 (that's about what I recall paying) and a nice set with gondola and caboose sold for $14.99 with only one bid about a month ago. So that is what I would offer the church, maybe $20 if I was feeling generous.
