I am having trouble getting my MTH Proto 1 engines to start up using the Lionel Legacy base and a TPC300. I have tried using the procedure that is suggested in the TPC300's instruction manual but with no luck. it seems like the starting voltage is to high which will not allow the engine to come out of the program mode. I am new to the Lionel Legacy controller so any help would be appreciated....Thanks

did you program the TPC with a number? use TR and bring up the TPC with the number you gave it, then press "M" set. now you are ready to turn the red knob and raise voltage. from what you have stated the TPC is putting 18 volts to the track. others will chime in with what ever I left out.
yes I have done that I am able to run proto 2 and 3 engines also all of my Williams engines have no problem.
thats all I can tell you.
sorry.
hope someone else will chime in.
If I remember correctly, the very early TPCs from I C Controls had a similar problem. The fix was to lower the voltage supply to the TPC to around 12 volts, get the engine out of reset and moving and raise the voltage back up again. Easy to do with a PW.ZW.. The other fix was to start the engine on a siding not controlled by the TPC and run it out to the tpc controlled track.
A bit of a pain either way. Hopefully you get it straighten out before reading this. Come to think about it, I believe it only applied to certain MTH proto-1 engines , (very early ones, around 1995 and before 97,

you are probably correct not comming out of reset.
these engines can be tough starting even with a Z-4000 in conventional mode.
That why I replaced all the batteries with BCR's
After you power up
Shut the power off
Then bring the voltage to 6 volts for about three seconds, shut the power off, then power up to 8 volts again and you shoul get the engine sounds etc.
