Looking to dip my toe into static grass, and also looking for a cleaner way to cut foam.  Browsing on Amazon, I see a wide variety of equipment at varying price points.

Searching for "static grass applicator", Amazon shows 3 basic types - one costs around $30 and is offered under multiple brand names that all have an identical picture, a slightly different one is around $70, and then there's the Woodland Scenics version for about $85.

A similar thing happens when searching for "hot wire foam cutter".  There are numerous items in the $25-35 range that all have the same picture, and then there's the Woodland Scenics tool at a higher price.

Does anyone have experience with the generic versions of these products?  I'm not averse to paying more for the Woodland Scenics stuff, but only if there's a bang for the buck.

Information about your experience is appreciated.  Thanks.

I purchased the GOCHANGEDIRECT 4 in 1 foam cutter from Amazon (currently $37.99) last year and all parts seem to work well. Bought this model because it had a digital voltage control to manage the temperature.

NB: I always thought the Tippi’s were overpriced, apparently to compensate the guy who pitched them at train shows. He gave a good demo, but couldn’t justify the cost compared to other options.

I bought the MagiDeal Portable Static Grass applicator on Amazon about 5 years ago. It has both plug in and battery operation. I use a rechargeable 9v battery, but any standard 9v will work fine. It does a nice job and includes 3 different grills (coarse, medium and funnel for limited area flocking). Current price is $70.99 on Amazon. Obviously this is a ‘no-name’ brand, but it seems to work as well as the more pricey models that appear almost identical in design.

BTW - this model has the metal mesh inside a plastic housing that protects users from a high voltage exposure. It seems well built and comparable in quality to the more expensive ‘name’ brands.

This is the foam cutter I have that came from Amazon. Looks similar to GMC's but mine you can't adjust the temperature.  Works quite well carving 2" foam.

I just got this static grass applicator for Christmas from my lovely wife. I haven't used it yet so I can't give a review yet. I like that you can plug it in or use a 9V battery.
