Hello Hiawatha fans ...the engine was designed as a single motor only ....but with testing pulling the 4 cars it was discovered the became warm .....solution ..add another motor ..now and fast ...
heavy ? ..oh yes ..there is a warning sheet to check your bridges and trestles before running in the original packing ..

This is Carol's ? layout ..outstanding display of standard gauge ...at one point the Hiawatha crosses a AF type timber trestle .....notice how it bows with the weight of the engine .
The Hiawatha was Lionel's first reintroduced piece of standard gauge since 1934 (1835 ?) ....outstanding set ...but price and the fact that most standard gauge collectors only like original pieces ...or reproductions of original pieces ( small dedicated group goes for the newly designed modern era stuff ) ..the Hiawatha was a commercial failure ...
Commodore was initially designed for Kline ....which dumped the project before production + - ...Lionel picked it up and had about the same (lack) success with it .....
flip both engines over entirely different train trains ..different manufactures in Korea
Both sets are under valued in today's market ..so take advantage and buy one at a reduced price and enjoy !
Cheers Carey
