The Network Rail System in the UK has suspended main line access (specifically steam powered) operated by "West Coast Railways", until May 15, 2015. It seems that on March 7, 2015 the crew of steam locomotive #34067, "Tangmere" apparently acknowledge an in-cab ATC speed reduction indication, but then did not actually comply with the requirements to reduce speed, resulting in a SPAD (Signal Passed At Danger), i.e. in US railroad language the crew failed to stop at a red signal! Naturally, an extensive investigation is now underway, as it was reported that a possible high speed collision was averted by only one minute.

The ban is in place for all trains operated by West Coast Railways regardless of type of locomotion be it steam, diesel or electric. Arrangements have been made for other operators to run at least some of the trips previously scheduled to be operated by WCRC during the time the ban is in effect. It's unfortunate this had to happen as we're at the time of year when UK railtour activity increases significantly following the winter lull. Most importantly, what could have been a major accident was averted in this particular case and Network Rail has taken prudent action in calling for the review.

There is good news to report regarding this situation. West Coast Railways Company has satisfied the requirements for restoration of its operating authority as set forth by Network Rail and will begin resumption of services.
