I have decided to ' try' to focus on steam. I am thinking of buying a pilot version big steamer, and only 1, probably just for display. I may operate it a bit but mostly display. Any suggestions out there re: great looking pilot with lots of detail. I know it is a personal item but I understand Lionel has a clear finish coat while MTH models do not. Any pros or cons or suggestions. I am not buying it hoping it will appreciate, heck , train hobby is like a casino. There seems to be many models out there in LHS and sites available, albeit I would like to support my store. Appreciate advice. If anyone is aware of deals on your travels that would be appreciated also.Al B

I'd say buy what you like, but don't pay too much. Most of them go for MSRP or less; I saw a NYC Mohawk the other day for $700. Some resellers have glommed onto the pilot models and are trying to peddle them at a big markup.
The pilot models are all pretty similar in concept, so pick something from your favorite railroad or type of engine and go for it. The UP 4-12-2 looks pretty cool in the pilot version. The MTH Euro steamers have been made in pilot versions and they just glitter with brass detail. I'd kind of like to have the pilot version of the Milwaukee Road S3 Northern, but for some reason those got snapped up in a hurry and it seems like most of them went to resellers who are now advertising them on eBay for $1700, with no buyers.
(Not sure what the Williams brass locos above have to do with this, but...)
I have 2 Lionel Pilot steamers and 1 MTH Engineering steamer. PRR 6-8-6; SP GS-6; SNCF
Chapelon 2-3-1. I love them as models, as I am a model-builder (not -quite- at that level
of expertise...ahem). I intend to purchase more, when and if.
I would love the Lionel PRR 4-4-4-4 T-1, NYC Niagara and Southern Ps-4 4-6-2 as Pilots; the unpainted N&W J 4-8-4 is really appealing that way - I have the painted one, but would swap...
But, I applaud your interest in them; once I had that Chapelon Pacific, I was hooked.
Ignore any thoughts of "investment" - why buy it if you're going to sell it at a questionable
later "value"? Just put your money in the bank.
The streamlined steamers seem to look the most striking in bare metal; however, if
you can locate Lionel's Pilot Baldwin Centipede, jump on it. Immensely striking, even if
not a steamer.
Thanks folks for input so far. I have been able to compare a MTH model long side same Lionel model and I have decided I like the Lionel finish better. I find the MTH models to be a bit rugged looking and that Lionel models have a light shine that I think shows the brass fittings better. IMO. So now the search is on for a Lionel model with lots of brass.
Open to more advice and input. And yes there seems to be many out there way below MSRP, ie: 20-25 %, new. AL B
