I'm curious what people think of the steamlocomotive.com site and database. I've seen remarks occasionally on the various forums here that sometimes question it or disagree with conclusions made from its data. While I am certain it is not perfect, it certainly is comprehensive, and I tend to view it as perhaps not perfect but fairly objective and even-handed in coverage of Railroads and locos/manufacturers, etc. I particularly like the fact that it gives links and listings of references, and rather complete explanations of calculated values (like L1 and M1) sufficient that I can reproduce them and tie them to books like How Steam Locomotives Really Work, etc. Are there other sites that are better. I particular, is there a site about British and European locos that is compareable? If so I can't find it.

steamlocomotive.info is a far better database in my book.
Lee, you might wish to check the Rail UK website for British railway information. They have a very extensive database, and very many photographs.
They even have details of my favourite little crane engine.

It is a good site, but it seems mostly photos - many great ones - I want mostly hard data, weights, dimensions, pressures, dates built, etc.

Thanks. Not sure why this did not come up in Google seraches but I have bookmarked it.
Nice little crane engine. But that operator has to be careful not to get hoisted on his own petard!
Thanks. I was aware of Victor's passing. I have an immense admiration for his work and great respect for his very fact-based method of research and writing.
Thank you, I have saved a link to that page. I was unaware of it, and it seems very useful.
