I'm planning on going to Steamtown in a couple of weeks for half a day on the way to a long weekend with the family and I understand that they offer 4 people the opportunity to take a cab ride during the day (one person for each short excursion).

Has anyone done this ride?  I understand that it is first-come first-served.  Does anyone know what the demand for this usually is and what is the likelihood that I can get one of these rides?

Be aware that there is no steam running at Steamtown right now. All 3 locos are in the shop and the first out is not expected on the rails until Labor Day for the annual event. I was there on Saturday and while I missed the steam it's still a good place to experience. Probably be able to do a diesel ride.

This is a good thread for past experiences to be posted, but if you want to know what the locomotive availability is, and advice on when to arrive, call (888)693-9391 ext 5204. The people at the ticket booth will have info on if steam is running that day.
Also, summer Fridays are the fastest selling days for cabrides. Get there early.
Thanks for the contact info.  There is indeed no steam right now.  They are hoping for July.

The "short" excursion is powered by a GP9 and the longer excursion by a pair of F3s.
