I have been working on my layout for a few years now, and with just recently finished installing all my switches and hooking them up to my ASC2's. Everything works fine from the CAB2 remote as it should. In fact the switches fire from my Ipad, it just doesn't stay synced with the actual switch direction. All of that is as it should be. The problem is when I went to add the STM2, connecting a wire from the #1 out screw terminal on my ASC2 that handles my #1 switch to the #1 position on the STM2. As soon I hook up the wire the ASC2 stops responding to the Ipad switch throw commands. Also when firing the switch from my CAB2 remote the Ipad shows the switch throwing direction opposite of what is actually happening, no matter whether I install the sense wire on the out or thru terminal. At this point I just have to figure that the STM2 is incompatible with the DZ1000 switch motor.

I had set the STM2 Sense wire up per the manual for a lionel tubular switch since its similar operation and wire setup to the dz1000. I then tired to set it up similar to the atlas setup in two wire mode. Making sure to reprogram the STM2 keying AUX2 instead of AUX1. That produced the same results, the Ipad could no longer throw the switch and the shown direction was always opposite of actual track direction and the CAB2 direction command.

If anybody has any ideas to try let me know as I'm currently ready to can the Ipad idea and offload my wifi and stm2 boxes, since everything works fine off the CAB2.

Connect the DZ1000 switch motor just like the Atlas switch motor on page 20 of the Lionel 78-2728-250 manual. The DZ1000 is a 3 terminal switch motor just like the ones that Atlas provides. You need to setup the STM2 in 2 wire mode. See page 14 of the Lionel manual. The STM2 in single wire mode is looking for the + and - of the Fastrack switch controller.

Do you have another DZ-1000 switch machine you could test to see if it responds the same way?
If you are using Atlas switches could you try the original Atlas switch machine to see if it works correctly?
Would you happen to have a DZ-1008 relay? If so that would allow you to operate the DZ-1000 with the DZ-1008 relay and use the relay contacts to provide 0 volts DC and +5 VDC to the STM2. The relay will isolate the DZ-1000 from the STM2. You could use single wire mode for the STM2. You would need a small 5VDC power supply to make this work.

I am using ross switches so no atlas machines to try. I have tested the setup with the same results on other DZ1000 switch machines as well. I do have some 1008 relays some where and I can probably dig through the junk charger/powersupply bucket for something thats 5V I was hoping for cost sake not to have to order a relay for every switch. One thing I can do in the mean time is test the STM2 with Lionel CC switch since I think I have one handy. If it passes with the fasttrack CC switch then it must be an issue with the DZ1000 and I'll start figuring out how to get the relay setup to test. Thanks for the guidance thus far Pennsy, I will report back as I get more work done.

The graphic shows how to connect the DZ-1008 relay to the STM2. I used a graphic another forum member posted and modified it to show just how the relay contacts connect to the STM2. You could use some batteries for testing. If you find your Lionel Fastrack switch and hook it up, measure the RSC and GND points on the switch with it thrown to straight and curved with a voltmeter. Three AA cells should work. Negative side of the cells to ground. You'll need to share the ground from the DC supply or the batteries with transformer ground. If the iPad is showing the switch position reversed then switch the NC and NO relay contacts. Your video was very helpful to see what you did. I use an iPad and the Wifi with Atlas switches. One advantage of the relay is you can use the STM2 in single wire mode. This allows the STM2 to sense more switches, 16 instead of 8. The DC supply or batteries are simulating the Fastrack switch. Let me know how it goes.

Well I didnt make a video, but I did find the last remaining fast track switch I had before ross/gg conversion. I got it all hooked up and it worked perfectly. So I can be confident in knowing that my STM2 isn't at fault or damaged. Now the relay setup and testing will take more time as all my DZ1000's are mounted under the table and I dont have a quick way to "test bench" a new setup. I also need to dig up a 5V supply or group some batteries together. Not tonight but maybe later this week. I'll return with my results.

Success! I gathered up some pieces and made another super quick and dirty test setup. This time around everything is working perfectly. The only thing I wasn't able to try was non derailing, but I can't see why that would affect operation of the setup. Anyways I made a post around 2 years back about this, and folks were more interested in the DZ-2500 setup however they made some good wiring diagrams and I used one as a template for my test setup and have modified it to share with anybody struggling to get the DZ-1000 and STM2 to behave. Now it looks like I just have to order a dozen or so DZ-1008 relays!!!
