Engine - PS 3 Union Pacific 837 steamer

I decided to reset my engine. Really no reason, it was operating fine. Of course when you do this is deletes the engine. Then my problem started. I could not add in on as my dcs system could not find an engine to add.

I tried the engine on a different transformer Z 1000 and it ran fine.

I reset the engine and it was successful with the Z 1000.

I tried to add to my DCS tract and still system can not find an engine to add.

I tried another train and it responded as it should in DCS.

I tried adding it on my test track. Nothing. Tried another train on same test track and worked in DCS as it should.

There is no switch for DCS or DCC on this engine to confuse things.

Of course no battery to worry about with  PS 3 engine.

Using 180 power bricks to fixed 1 input. Track wired to fixed 1 output. Confirm DSC signal with another train. No lashup up with this engine. Engine not list on active or inactive menu.

So why can't I add this engine?

You said the engine reset worked. Did you hear the 2 horn blasts after?

Have you tried the recover engine function?

Does it play full shut down sounds if you kill the power to it?

You may have to take the engine to a repair shop for them to see if there's an address attached to the board's memory. Possibly downloading the soundfile into the engine may help reset it further if you can. Something's scrambled. Either the remote (for that engine address) or the board.

No offense meant, but why reset a good running engine? Is there some other reason for you doing it? Was there an issue not mentioned above?

1.) People do silly things Im not much different. No offense taken.

2.) Don't feel like taking time to update TUI thus I don't have recover engine function. Note: maybe I will have to update now.

3.) Yes I got the short 2 blasts on the reset.

4. Acts normal in conventional including shutdown.

5. Test track is dedicate short track for one train engine.

Any other ideas, thank for the new info to me on the engine recover / need to update.

Just hasn't been the best past two weeks. Three PS 3 locomotives down waiting for new drawbars. I guess over time they just don't stay attached or maybe I'm to hard on disconnecting them.

I had a problem with a diesel. Would only run in one direction. Last night I got around to taking the shell off. I had notice sparks on the one truck when it would stop. Simple fix a screw was loose on a screw attached to the truck. I guess it was enough to disrupt power. It's works great now. However I lost three of my ditch lights that flash with the horn. Must be the spring type of connections since they are not hardwired. For now the train works great I can live without the flashing lights.

If there are no other solutions for getting the other engine back to running with my dcs I guess I will run it conventional until I decide to update. Not in a big hurry to do that. Now for the record I have updated it once but that was over 8 or 10 years ago.

Funny, but I recently had a similar experience.  I reset the engine and deleted it from both my handheld and ipad because I wanted to have a similar configuration on both.  But then I couldn’t add the engine back as it couldn’t be found.  After trying several things, I shutdown fixed 2 and variable 1 & 2 which were also set to fixed so only fixed 1 was powered.   I then removed all other engines and boom, it was found on the first try.  Not sure why, but I wasn’t going to argue with success. Not sure this is of any help to you as you have a different setup, but who knows?

4)  It has to have the power cut to test the caps for shutdown sounds.

I do have 4.0 as the latest up date. But I can't find the recover engine function. I go to systems. Then engine setup.  Option then are add engine, edit engine and delete engine. I go to add engine. I have two choices, add MTH engine and add TMCC engine. I choose MTH and it reads non engine to add.

Am I looking at the wrong place to find engine recover?

Btw the read button will not find engine either.

One bug that caused the DCS version to be updated in version 4.0, was adding engines!

Version 4.10 Fixes

  • Corrects bug in engine add routine
  • Read feature reliability improved
  • Engine add routine improved to increase reliability
  • If running the remote in Speed Operating mode – The remote will switch to Normal Operating mode when performing operations that require two-way communication with the TIU/Engine then switch back to Speed mode
  • Corrects sticky relay issue on AIU

IS your set up just one TIU?  Is the address of TIU 1 (Led blinks once before going solid)?  Use Fixed 1 only as mentioned on your track and try it.  If fails, power TIU but use fix 2.  Does that work?

You can have a TIU problem where once deleted it can't communicate well with engine.  Have you deleted any other engines and re-added them?

Can you do a track signal test with one of your engines that is responding?  Are you sure the engine deleted from the remote?  G

I just have one TIU.

It blinks once.

Fixed one will not add.

Tried fix 2 and the engine came alive in neutral, however I could not add or move.

Funny fix 2 still had power when I disconnect power to fix 1. I thought you had to have power through fix 1 for tiu to work.

I checked var 2 has dsc and it does.

Track is just a test track, short piece just longer than engine and has good signal.

Well at least I had somewhat of a progress I guess as the engine at least comes on in neutral in fix 2. But can not add

I checked my remote and the engine is not listed. Would it hurt to delete every engine in the remote then try to add?

Not frustrated just a pain when I can figure it out.

Maybe I will just go out and buy a new too. The local shop has a new one in stock. Will solve the update. I'm just tired of trying to figure this one out. They have a remote too. So i would have the WiFi and a new remote.

Cheaper than all the time I have invested trying to figure this out.

FYI fixed one has to be powered or the aux power on the TIU for the other channels to have signal. It sounds like you're powering the TIU with fixed #1 in, so that has to be on to test or use the other channels.

Also, just because they have a newer TIU, does not mean it's up to date on the latest software. The seller should confirm it is if you ask them to. DCS 6.1.

Update so you know where I'm at on this issue. Lol I gave up. The TIU and remote is boxed along with the offending locomotive. I have 45 min trip to a LHS, Lens Trains who is a certified MTH service shop. They will update my TIU and solve the problem with adding the locomotive. I just don't have the time down side of being so far from retirement.

I just wanted to give the update so people don't have to keep offering solutions.

I really appreciate every one who took the time to try and help me find a solution. But at $250 an hour I have to get back to work. Lol that is how much i think my time is worth not what i actualy get. Hey you have to have some fun when things are not going your way.

I thought I would at least end this thread with the final outcome.

First a big thank you to Lens Trains who turned this around over the Thanksgiving holiday week.

1.) TIU - fully updated to 6.1  note as to why I didn't update. Well first I don't have a computer. Yep been using a tablet for several years. Never checked to see if it would work and for $30 it was easy for me.

2.) My PS 3 engine - well not so lucky as the board is bad and will not let the train add to the remote. I made the decision not to get it updated. The cost was not worth it for a Rail King locomotive.

I'm not upset about it. Though disappointed as I have only about an hour run time on it. I think it still runs conventionally, if not I will update.

For the life of me I can not figure out what damaged the board. No shorts, no overfilling of smoke fluid it was running fine then just acted a little strange. In any event things happen and life goes on.

Len did tell me if I wanted a new board they were on backorder from MTH.
