I need to replace a smoke unit # AA0000010, which is no longer available. The problem is with the metal bowl of the existing unit, it is falling apart. The circuit board and the fan motor are working fine. Any suggestions of a smoke unit that could accommodate the circuit board and fan motor. If not, a total replacement unit would be fine. It is for product # 20-2189-1. The bowl size is important, I could fabricate the height if necessary.

Perhaps a picture and/or dimensions for us folks that have no idea what that particular smoke unit looks like?
It looks like it's the standard sized smoke bowl that would be found on the standard diesel smoke unit for PS2 with the long posts, AA-2100000.
I have one of those models I could take apart, but I'm not that energetic.

George, isn't that the standard smoke unit bowl and fan assembly? When I was upgrading mine, I sure don't remember anything odd about the smoke unit except for the board was different than some PS/1 units. The picture in the parts manual sure looks like the standard smoke unit base.
Yes standard, but early on there were one piece smoke unit casting assemblies. So if the fan area broke, the whole unit needs to be replaced. Later engines seem to all have 2 piece castings. G
Yep, I believe I have one of the single piece units in my parts box. However, that's the only one I've ever personally run across.
I have seen them in PS-1 and early PS-2 diesels. G
John, the single piece unit was popular in non powered diesel locomotives as well as some powered diesels. I save all these as well as the bad PCB that may be part of them. They have a big chamber that will hold two 16 ohm MTH resistors for doing DCS upgrades. The units with the tubes are 3RD Rail diesels. The brass stand off tubes are also very handy as this gives another dimension for custom mounting.
I have some of the long brass tubes from 3rd rail stuff, they're interesting, but not all that useful anywhere else. 
John, with the brass tubes removed, you now have threaded access on the bottom of the unit and that allows you to fabricate your mount of choice. With the 3rd rail, the unit can be mounted anywhere and the tube is great for this. I like these whenever possible.
One problem with the long tubes is getting the smoke fluid into the smoke unit. I've done some buildings, and I have to position the smoke unit in a convenient place to allow me to fill the smoke. I've done short tubes in a couple of engines, but I've avoided a long run in a tube as I figured I'd have issues with filling the smoke.
