I'm interested in buying or modeling a load for a short 1860s flatcar that is a scale 29 feet in length. I want something a little more interesting than lumber or logs, but don't wish to scratch build a project that will take all summer. What ideas do you have, please?

Pieces of rail, they seemed to enjoy tearing the rails up during the war so replacing them must have been a top priority...ties too.
Weapons such as cannon and howitzers would be good loads too.

This is one I posted on the real trains forum the other day
What about barrels?
What about the MTH cannon cars? Check here...
I have bought brass cannons, boxes, and barrels for flatcar loads from Kramer Products.
They are O scale and go quite nicely with my SMR flats.

Well, there are lots of good ideas presented here. Thank you all.
Coffins?
If I remember, Terry Whelmen from trainloads.com used to do either granite blocks or granite pillars (in sections).

I appreciate each of your responses. Here's what I decided to do. I bought from Robert Grossman (bless him) his #224 "Freight Set" and #91 "Barrels". These were combined with two cardstock crates I had from a CTT giveaway years ago and arranged on the flatcar on double-sided tape. They were secured together with a cloth-covered wire from my wife's craft projects.

That load looks good!!! In a recent movie set in the post Civil War era had a flat loaded with fence post stacked pyramid style that looked believable and not too difficult to replicate if you need another load.
A couple more great ideas there! Dave, I can see them made from fireplace matches. They're kind of rough as you buy them. Just whittle one end of each to a point, eh?
