Just wondering out loud if anyone else shuts down the trains for the summer ? Theres' so much to do in the short summer season here that I cover up the layouts & don't even do anything model trains related until fall. This is the 1st time I've wandered in here for about 4 months. What got me to think of it was seeing the hobby magazines at the local supermarket when I wandered over there while shopping with the wife. Sure is hot out.

Not really. Trains for me is all year long. I hate the summer weather. Spending times in AC running my trains is great.
I probably do more in the summer than the winter. For some reason I hate spending a lot of time in the basement in the winter. I think it is because of how it gets dark so early.

TRAINS ARE GREAT IN THE SUMMER ESPECIALLY IN MY COOL BASEMENT !!!!
I run all year long!
You'd think here in the Pacific NW, nobody would be running anything until it starts raining again in October.
But really, all the big local layouts (of varying scales) have been doing op sessions with no respite.
I'm an all season train guy! Hot, cold, rain or snow my trains are on the go
For me trains are best in the Spring/early summer and Autumn. Over here int he Uk the full winter is to cold and the height of summer to hot for trains in my loft.
I've spent more time in the basement than usual since it's been such a hot miserable summer.
Every night from 9 pm to 11pm... I am workin on the railroad!
Trains all year.
My trains are in the garage and it is HOT in Texas, so time is usually real late in the day or 8-10 AM

Ditto this! I've been able to get more done on the basement layout this summer than I did for the last 3 winters!!! It's like getting the ol' 'mojo' back!
Speaking of which, nothing to mow, Joe!...(Heck, the grass is so crunchy brown, it sounds like your walking on crusty snow!....especially with these new-fangled hearing aids I just got plugged into!!.....EH, WHAT?!?!?)

June marks the beginning of the winter season....we spend the summer getting ready for our modular displays in the Fall and Winter.
We start with 9 days at the Chesterfield County Fair.
One day for Midlothian Village Day.
One day for Ashland Rail Day.
3 days at the Science Museum of Virginia after Thanksgiving.
7 weeks of Friday's, Saturday's and Sunday's at the Great Big Greenhouse.
There is lots to do!
Though I run trains on my home layout in the summer, the project are uninvolved. That's what January through May are for.

And this, boys and girls, is one of many reasons I went with a smaller layout than I could have had, to have it in a bedroom with central air.
year 'round hobby......do all the outdoor chores/jobs first....then head to the trainroom.
I am enjoying a piece of Pumpkin pie, then back for my third attack on the layout today. building the frame work for section 6 of 6. YAY!!!.. Retirement is nice, if you are not feedig/walking the mutts. Cooking/lawn/food store...at least now I have time for the trains. house has full AC and it is nice. no more garage/floor/room. Now only a small 20 'X 40 'x 20' layout in the basement, L shaped.
I had to take down the layout in June and move out of my office into the renovated rear basement room. I moved the table and have been reassembling it. Nice and cool with the central air going. I'm a year round guy.
I have been shut down since Spring. My son does not ask to run trains anymore and I seem to have lost my desire to do anything. I am not sure how much longer we will have a layout.
All year round...
I do most of my projects during the summer, as too hot to do much outdoors.
