Good Morning Everyone,
I will start with some pictures of a locomotive diesel fueling area I just started.

Alan- that diesel facility is off to a great start!
Life has been a bit hectic so I haven’t had the chance to contribute to the showcase as much I’d like. Hopefully things will calm down a bit as we approach 2023!
A few months ago it came across an old PRR signal tower in my neighborhood. You can read about it and see some photos here: https://railfanguides.us/dc/vi...iaavetower/index.htm
I thought I’d make an attempt at a scratch built model with a slightly different medium - carving foam. It’s not perfect, but I’ve been pleased with the progress. Up next will be the roof and some interior detailing. I also need to do a bit of work on the upper trim around the bay window, gutters, and all that fun stuff. One of Scale City Design’s PRR tower signs will be a nice finishing touch.
Here’s a paper mock-up of the main part of the roof. It looks a bit too high, so I’ll make some adjustments before pulling out the styrene sheets.
Great stuff here every weekend. I apologize that I haven't had any contributions lately.....I stopped building/structure construction recently and into the near future while I do this:
I still have previously accumulated kits to build, and, I got a few more at York!
Have a great Sunday, folks!
Peter
Alex W - Nice job on carving the form. What kind of paint do you have to use on the foam?
I have been working on placing buildings on my layout and adding scenery. Here is a section I am working on.

Hi Matthew. Looks like the start of a great scene! Thanks for the kind words. For the tower I used cheap craft store acrylics for the brick and bay window.
The concrete areas were Mission Models acrylic. I added mixed in a touch of white paint to that to get the desired shade.
Alan, are those pump-motors from a kit or are you scratch building? They look exactly realistic.
Alan you make quick work of petroleum handling facilities. I really like the secondary containment wall. Definitely makes it a modern facility
Alex, very nice ob. That method sure looks like a lot of work carving all the mortar joints. How in the world did you accomplish the relief of the different brick courses on the lower level.
Peter you took advantage of the warmer weather to paint and build a variety of structures for your layouts. Now that fall is here it's ok to move inside and begin laying rails. I'm sure once that's done you'll be contributing regularly, placing structures you have read and building more. I just ordered the hotel kit during the 40% off sale. Can't wait to see your build of that kit.
Sirt by planning ahead did you mean you've already built those models so you have them ready for the new layout or are those what you're planning to build?

Sirt,
This is great! I have a DD building I want to do something like this to. This will be a great reference. Also, I may have asked this before, but are you going to incorporate 2-rail into your new layout?
Dave
More work on another downtown Boston building. SO much handpainting windows...
And color inspiration building from Google Maps...

Yes Joe, most items are ready to install after the module is designed around it.

Dave - 3R operation on mains, 2r sidings and dummy tracks using MTH Scale Trax I rail. You can slide out the center rail on the Scale Trax to get the 2r look. Also, this will allow 3r wheel flanges to operate normally. 2R will be on siding sections where diesels don’t need to go, only 3r freight cars. No need to have full 3r sidings with center rail on them. 2R will be used on abandoned tracks as well.
All G.G. manual switches are ready to install for street running. There will be very few ties showing. Mainly cobblestone streets. When I build a layout, the buildings, terrain, height and backdrop are made first then the tracks are figured out last for the industry.
Backwards vs. everyone else.
Black cardboard is placed on 3r tracks and switches as pavement to disguise the black center rail, white cardboard will show as cement on 2r section of streets.
Using G.G. switches with MTH Scale Trax, shims must be added to make level. Pins / connectors are irrelevant since everything is jump soldered together.
Maybe something like this all around...
New, bright LED lighting will be purchased.
Some back drops shown below. You can copy / paste scenes between flats and paper buildings. The sky will have to be hand painted to match. Might keep it simple misting FOG for blending everything as one background?
Great stuff today everyone. Keep it coming.
Sirt,
I appreciate all of the information and the photos. It sounds like this was well thought through with some great ideas. You have prepared some spectacular buildings for your complex on the new layout. I really like the area where the Fender warehouse will be. I can't wait to see this process when you start.

SIRT, it looks like you have NYC covered so I'll send some trains down from Boston.
I do look forward to how you set up your G.G. switches in the streets as I have some street running tracks to put in as well, both for street cars and Union Freight running along Atlantic Avenue.
